I've never been more grateful for sleep in my life until I had twins.
I think if there were a manual given to newborn twins it would go like this:
How to Sleep the First 2 Months of Your Life (Twins Edition):
1. Don't.
2. If you must sleep, coordinate shifts with your sister so that you never sleep at the same time.
3. Only sleep if you are being held. The second you are set down in a crib, swing, bassinet, floor, etc, scream. Keep screaming until your parents have learned never to set you down again.
4. Make sure your parents know that holding you while you sleep takes priority over them eating, sleeping, or using the bathroom.
5. Don't worry about this ruining your relationship with your parents. You are the cutest babies ever, and that will win them over constantly. You are in control.
Let me just tell you a little bit about our sleep situation. We were delusional. This includes the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.
We are so lucky to live close to both sets of grandparents. They have been incredible. They set up shifts to help with the girls constantly while Eric worked, and this includes nights. I wish I had secretly taken pictures of everyone who has helped me and how completely exhausted all of us were. I am sooo grateful for all of their help.
Delusions and dreams include:
Grandpa Ames seeing Eric come home from work over and over again but never actually coming home. Also he had a vision of our house without the wall that separates our two front rooms (a project I've always dreamed of) and he is my witness that it is a good idea.
Grandpa Mills about to call his work crew and tell them to stay home from work because it was too windy. The wind was actually the white noise machine running all night...
Eric constantly looking for a baby in our bed and thinking he had lost one or both when really they were either with me downstairs or in their crib for once.
I had a dream that we only had one twin and a few weeks later had to have the second twin via another c section. The doctors had cut me open but got distracted with something, and I was so angry I started squirting them in the eyes with my milk, the only weapon I had when I was paralyzed waist down. Take that!
Things are much better now. We have all started to get a little more sleep and it is glorious. When I get 3 hours in a row, I'm a whole new person! I love sleep.
